DVD Content Protection
The flexibility to copy DVD’s has been contrvrsial throughout the music and movie industries. Content Protection for Recordable Media and Pre-Recorded Media (CPRM/CPPM) devices have been developed, helping to control the copying of, movement of or deletion on digital media or your home computer. Ipods, Iphones, DVD burning software and other recent technology has made it easy to copy all of your media files to share with other people for free.
The CPRM/CPPM programs prevent the ability to copy by including encryptions that protect the recorded material. The CPRM/CPPM specifications are defined by key management that works in combination with interchangable data, content encryption and media renewability. While this technology can support things such as DVD media and flash memory cards, it is most commonly used for secure digital cards.
Many movie companies are installing this content protection service on their DVD’s prior to release so that they are not illegally copied in the consumer market place. There is a large demand for bootlegged movies and copies at a reduced rate when movies and DVD home videos are released. When movies are re-sold in the underground markets, the movie studios and affiliated companies are cut out of the profits that they need to pay for their costs and to generate their expected profits. While DVD movies are not the largest portion of their total revenues, it is a significant portion. DVD content protection technology can prevent illegal DVD copying.
